General Guideline for implementing SDS

Here is a brief outline of the tasks relative to implementing Regulator (SDS) in Formulator. The numbers in parentheses refer to the menu option in Formulator:

  1. Create List of Regulations for section 15 – example:  California Prop 65 (405).  If you will be printing TSCA and/or SARA you should create those regulations here also.

  2. if your company has purchased LOLI:

    1. Map LOLI Regulations (425)

    2. Import via spreadsheet a list of applicable CAS numbers if they do not already exist in Formulator (25)

    3. Update CAS data  from LOLI (25)

  3. Enter CAS numbers and associated data under Hazmat File Maintenance (25).  You may ignore the “other data” tab.

  4. Assign CAS numbers to Raw Materials (10) under the <Regulatory> tab.  Make sure your parts add up to 100.  Use “INERT” for the CAS number to represent the non-hazardous portion.

  5. Assign Flash Points, EU Risk & Safety Phrases, HMIS & NFPA ratings to Formulas * (20)

  6. Assign Purviews (example: DOT, IATA, IMDG) to Formulas (20) for section 14 of the SDS

  7. Create Languages if planning multilingual output (955) *

  8. Populate the Phrase Library (410) with translations if planning multilingual output *

  9. Create the ISO-16 Template (415)

  10. Formula GHS rating review before printing an SDS (402)

    1. Set the preferred method for selecting the physical properties that will print in section 9 under the <properties> tab

    2. Review the data on the other tabs for accuracy.

    3. Make any desired changes and <save>

  11. Generate the SDS (430)

    1. Check off the Regulations that you want to print in section 15

    2. Be sure to leave the report option blank if your company does not have a customized format.

    3. If you wish to suppress certain sections or data, check off the applicable “Suppress Section flags” to your right. Most companies will check TSCA and SARA since they are using the regulations for this.  The old versions of Formulator used a different method for TSCA and SARA.

  12. Optional: If your company has Crystal Reports Designer you may modify SDS format (example:  add logo, change fonts etc.).  If not you may request changes from Formulator Software (additional fees apply)
